Position Available: Communications Specialist
Location: Western United States (preferably California) - remote with travel as needed
Reporting To: Communications Director

Role at a Glance:
We seek a strategic, action-oriented communications professional to lead our outreach, media relations, and advocacy efforts in support of members, organizing, and patient-centered care. This role coordinates with communities, medical associations, elected officials, and other partners to advance our mission.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop national/state/local outreach and stakeholder engagement plans; build durable alliances with community partners, medical groups, and elected officials.
  • Lead internal and external communications: newsletters, emails, op-eds, press materials, fact sheets, and website content.
  • Manage media relations: press releases, briefings, interviews, rapid responses, and events.
  • Oversee digital channels (social media, blogs, website, email/SMS) and explore mobile-app opportunities.
  • Support organizing and advocacy campaigns with clear messaging and strategic branding.
  • Produce regular activity reports and ensure alignment with organizational priorities.

Essential Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in communications or related field; + experience in strategic communications across campaigns (organizing, political, legislative, or community/grassroots). Proven ability to translate strategy into actionable programs; strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills. Experience in media relations (press materials, briefings, interviews) and digital communications. Ability to travel domestically; valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. Knowledge of labor movement/union organizing; strong research and political analysis skills.

Proficiency with office software; comfort with multiple communication platforms (X/Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok) and multimedia production.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in healthcare policy or labor organizing; basic graphic/video production.
  • Multilingual abilities and experience engaging diverse communities.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary: $100,000 – $115,000 (commensurate with experience)
