Job Description

JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE

Delta Utilities is seeking a Damage Prevention Coordinator who monitors and inspects contract locating activities and completes related documentation to ensure compliance with company contracts and guidelines, and applicable Federal, State, and local laws, codes, standards, and ordinances. Frequent customer, contractor, and excavator contact including conflict management.

ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Promotes damage prevention activities and encourage open communication with excavators.
  • Observes and inspects the various phases of the line locating work to determine if work is conforming to Company standards.
  • Enforces all standards, specifications, and any special provisions of the line locating work.
  • Enforces all provisions of the line locating contracts between the company and the contractor.
  • Monitors quality and cycle time of contractor’s service through evaluation of metrics and field audits.
  • Investigates third party damages as designated by the Damage Prevention Manager.
  • Assists the company in the collection of third-party damages through accurate and timely field investigation reports and acts as a first-person witness when necessary.
  • Analyzes the root cause of investigated third party damages and communicates how future damages may be avoided.
  • Assist contractor locators with difficult and hard-to-find locates.
  • Responds to customer complaints and follows up with the customer as to the status or resolution of the complaint.
  • Work with other members of the Public Awareness and Damage Prevention teams to implement consistent community education programs.
  • Involvement with state One-Call Centers, and state damage prevention programs including enforcement issues.
  • Represent the department and actively participate in the company’s Public Awareness and Damage Prevention Committee.
  • Assists other CenterPoint Energy departments for special locating needs.
  • Handles special assignments on short notice.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Minimum education required of the position

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in a business or technical discipline from an accredited college or university or eight (8) years of work experience. Every two years of experience is equivalent to one year of education.

Minimum experience required of the position

  • Requires a minimum three (3) years of utility distribution system experience with demonstrated line locating and/or damage prevention skills.

Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities preferred of the position

  • Able to read and interpret maps; and demonstrate a basic understanding of a utility distribution system, line locating practices; and strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, and demonstrate courtesy, tact, and good judgment and professional conduct when communicating in person, by telephone, or electronic communications
  • Able to function in a stressful environment, multi-task and manage several projects/activities at one time, and provide the appropriate skill in conflict management/conflict resolution
  • Able to demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Able to apply basic mathematics to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and calculation of fractions and percentages

  • Able to work indoors, in an office environment, regardless of whether open office, cubicle or private office.
  • Able to work in all weather conditions with occasional exposure to hot, dirty and/or greasy equipment and noise when at field installation sites.
  • Able to travel outside of primary work location, in any weather conditions and occasionally overnight, to field locations, remote areas, conferences and/or meetings.
  • Able to wear personal protection safety equipment, such as respirator, safety glasses, hard hat, gloves, and ear plugs occasionally as required by the work.
  • Able to operate a motor vehicle including ability to enter and exit the vehicle unassisted and travel long distances
