Arts in Action Community Charter School opened in Fall 2011 with grades K-5. The elementary program aims to provide a rigorous academic foundation while developing the whole child through a rich arts program, a daily socio-emotional learning component, and modeling advocacy through social justice initiatives.  

Arts in Action Community Middle School opened in Fall 2016 and serves grades 6-8 students. We believe that all students deserve access to the arts. We believe that instruction should be culturally relevant, inclusive and meet the diverse needs of all learners. JOB DESCRIPTION: Arts in Action Schools is seeking a compassionate, motivated, and dedicated Counselor Intern to join our dynamic student support team. This internship offers a valuable opportunity for aspiring school counselors to gain hands-on experience in a supportive, equity-focused, and arts-integrated educational environment.

The Counselor Intern will work closely with the counseling team to provide social-emotional, behavioral, and academic support to students in both individual and group settings. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to student wellness, be eager to learn, and demonstrate sensitivity to the diverse backgrounds of our school community.

Under the supervision of the Director of Accessible Education, the School Counseling Intern will be responsible for tasks that support the academic success of all students and promote a positive learning environment in line with the school's values. This may include, but is not limited to, providing small group and 1:1 student counseling, supporting with parent workshops and school events & supporting with schoolwide counseling initiatives. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Assists school counselors in developing and maintaining an effective school counseling program consistent with the school’s mission and goals.
  • School Counselors work at all school system levels to support students' social, emotional, and academic well-being. 
  • Counsel students individually and in small groups.
  • Conducts classroom guidance activities.
  • Exposes students to career exploration and interest inventories.
  • Review school data for evidence that the school counseling program meets all students' academic, career, and personal/social development needs.
  • Prepares reports, records, and all other required information and data.
  • Encourages teacher/parent communication and community involvement.
  • Assists students in conflict resolution.
  • Refers students to appropriate school personnel and community agencies.
  • Participates in SSTP, IEP, and 504 meetings (as required)
  • Serves as a resource for school personnel and parents.
  • Follows required procedures and practices
  • Attends division-wide counselor meetings
  • Participates in professional development activities

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required
  • Demonstrated progress toward completing a Master’s degree from an approved counselor education program. 
  • Strong communication and computer skills are essential.
  • Has a working knowledge of various forms of academic, social, and emotional support for Elementary and middle school students.
  • Able to speak to the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion and express self-awareness and a desire to grow your cultural competence as a mental health professional. 

WAGE AND BENEFITS:  This is a part-time (up to 25 hours a week), 10-month hourly position for the academic year with the option of summer work. The hourly rate is: $18.00-$22.00 an hour. Compensation is determined based on years of experience; a competitive benefits package is included.
