The Position

The Photographer/Videographer creates high-quality, creative, professional photos and videos that resonate with a wide range of audiences and develops content for multiple outlets including the College’s website, publications, social media platforms and other communications. Understands the importance of storytelling and photojournalism in telling a brand story. Must be immersed in campus life and know how to capture the spirit of the College in an active and enticing way. Manage and complete assigned photo and video projects as well as actively seek out new photo and video opportunities. Work will include occasional nights and weekends.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Execute photography and video projects, per art direction, for various communications needs including event photography, interviews, campus life, staged shoots, portraits, etc.
  • Create professional-quality photographs using creative and artistic skill, demonstrating excellent skills and knowledge of lighting and composition. Edit photos with Adobe Lightroom and/or Photoshop.
  • Manage all aspects of production including operation of still and video cameras, lighting, sound, editing, color correction, captioning and file delivery.
  • Edit raw footage into polished, engaging videos using industry-standard software (Adobe Premiere Pro preferred). Execute post-production tasks including color-correcting, audio mixing, and producing motion graphics and special effects when appropriate.
  • Take initiative to identify and capture unique and compelling images that showcase the college's location, community and culture.
  • Analyze existing photo library and identify gaps and needs.
  • Manage all digital assets using digital asset management software, including acquisition, cataloging and tagging for a robust photo archive.
  • Assist with posting content to website and social media as needed.
  • Arrange and manage outsourced photography and videography when needed.
  • Work with Marketing and Communications team to ensure that institutional positioning, key messages, branding and graphic standards are represented consistently.
  • Provide mentorship/training opportunities for student assistants.

Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Must provide a photo and video portfolio to be considered.
  • Strong understanding of camera settings, lens selection, and other technical aspects of photography to capture high-quality images in various lighting conditions.
  • Extremely adept with photo and video equipment, studio and location lighting and audio recording.
  • Advanced knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom and Premiere Pro, and other software as necessary.
  • Experience with landscape, portrait and marketing photography. Excellent eye for composition and a photojournalist style that will show energy in a way that resonates with audiences and lets them imagine themselves at Roanoke College.
  • 3-5 years of professional experience.
  • A self-starter with excellent organizational, prioritization and time-management skills and the ability to self-motivate and work independently under very tight deadlines.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Excellent communication and storytelling skills for communicating creative ideas effectively with a variety of stakeholders and audiences.
  • Knowledge of captioning and accessibility best practices.
